EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the famous and prominent J B Hopkins, an influential figure of the nineteenth century. The engraving, skillfully created by Frederick Waddy, captures the essence of this remarkable man. Taken from Cartoon Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Men of the Day, this illustration exemplifies Waddy's perceptive talent in capturing the character and achievements of his subjects. In this satirical drawing, Hopkins is depicted with a touch of humor and scathing satire. During a time when celebrity culture was emerging, these cartoon portraits became highly sought after as they provided a glimpse into the lives of renowned individuals. Hopkins' portrait stands out among others due to its Victorian charm and attention to detail. As one examines this picture closely, it becomes evident that Waddy's caricature successfully portrays not only Hopkins' physical appearance but also his personality traits. This satirical cartoon serves as both entertainment for viewers and a commentary on society at large. Bridgeman Images has preserved this invaluable piece from their private collection, allowing us to appreciate the artistry behind Waddy's work while gaining insight into the notable men who shaped history during that era.
