EDITORS COMMENTS
Modern Military Gallantry - A sketch near the New Palace / Keep outside - Oh dear it is so dirty, c. 1829 (coloured etching) by Heath, William (1795-1840); National Army Museum, London; This print captures a humorous moment in history as depicted by the talented artist Paul Pry, also known as William Heath. The scene takes place near the iconic Buckingham Palace, then known as the Queens House. In this caricature, we witness a guardsman on sentry duty displaying his gallant nature by preventing a fashionable young lady from stepping into the muddy pathway leading to the clean steps of the palace. With one hand pointing towards her feet and another firmly placed on his hip, he stands tall in his uniform while protecting both royalty and fashion. The contrast between elegance and muddiness adds an element of comedy to this artwork. The lady's fashionable attire contrasts sharply with her precarious position atop a muddy patch. Meanwhile, our gallant guardsman maintains his composure amidst this amusing encounter. Published in 1829 by T McLean in London, this coloured etching showcases not only artistic talent but also provides us with insight into societal norms and fashions of that era. Now preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this delightful piece serves as a reminder of military gallantry intertwined with everyday life during early 19th-century England.
