EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Johann Adam Schall von Bell, a remarkable figure from history whose contributions to China are beautifully illustrated in this engraving by Athanasius Kircher. Born in Germany in 1591, Schall von Bell was not only a Jesuit missionary but also an accomplished mathematician and astronomer. In this image, we see him standing confidently with his arms crossed, adorned in traditional Chinese robes that symbolize his deep connection to the Qing Dynasty. His gaze is focused and determined, reflecting his unwavering dedication to scientific exploration and discovery. The engraving highlights the various astronomical devices surrounding Schall von Bell, including an armillary globe and compass. These instruments were crucial for his mathematical calculations and observations of celestial bodies during his time in China. Schall von Bell's profound impact on Chinese society cannot be overstated. Through his teachings and knowledge-sharing, he fostered a deeper understanding of astronomy among the Chinese people while also earning their respect as a trusted advisor to the emperor.
