EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stunning interior of the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft, painted by Emanuel de Witte in 1656. The oil on canvas artwork measures 97x85 cm and is currently housed at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France. The focus of this masterpiece is "Le Tombeau de Guillaume le Taciturne dans la Nouvelle Eglise" which translates to "The Tomb of William the Silent in the New Church". William the Silent, also known as Count of Nassau and Prince of Orange, was a prominent figure in Dutch history during the 16th century. De Witte's attention to detail is evident as he skillfully portrays every aspect of this grand space. The viewer is immediately drawn to the intricate columns that line both sides of the church, creating a sense of depth and perspective. Light streams through stained glass windows, illuminating various architectural elements and adding an ethereal quality to the scene. As we gaze upon this photo print, we can almost feel ourselves stepping into history as a visitor exploring this magnificent place. It serves as a reminder not only of De Witte's artistic prowess but also pays homage to an important historical figure whose tomb lies within these walls.
