EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Summer, 1869-70" by Edward Coley Burne-Jones transports viewers to a world of beauty and symbolism. The young woman depicted in the artwork embodies the essence of purity and grace, reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite movement that swept through England during this period. The artist's meticulous use of gouache on paper brings out every intricate detail, showcasing his exceptional talent. Measuring at an impressive 122.5x45 cm, this piece demands attention with its grandeur. Classical influences are evident throughout the composition, as seen in the allegorical elements carefully woven into the scene. The abundance of roses symbolizes love and passion while also representing Maria Zambaco, a prominent figure from Burne-Jones' life who served as both muse and model for many of his works. Mary, another possible reference within this artwork's title, adds an additional layer to its interpretation. Perhaps she represents purity or innocence amidst a backdrop filled with rich symbolism. Displayed here is just one example from Roy Miles Fine Paintings' private collection - a testament to their dedication in preserving remarkable pieces like these for future generations to appreciate.
