EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of Kakiemon elephants from the late 17th century Edo Period in Japan. Standing four square with their heads raised and turned to one side, these exquisite porcelain sculptures exude an air of elegance and grace. Each elephant possesses its own unique characteristics - one with pricked ears and the other with flattened ears, adding depth to their individuality. The attention to detail is remarkable, as seen in the rectangular brocade saddlecloth adorning each elephant's back. Painted in vibrant Kakiemon palette, delicate peony flowers bloom amidst scrolling karakusa patterns on the cloth. Tied securely with a red tasselled cinch, it adds a touch of opulence to these magnificent creatures. Measuring 28.7cm high and 27cm wide, this pair of Kakiemon elephants is part of the esteemed Burghley House Collection located in Lincolnshire, UK. Their presence evokes a sense of awe and wonderment as they stand tall as symbols of strength and majesty. Dating back to the early 17th century during Japan's Tokugawa or Edo Period (1603-1868), these elephants are not only masterpieces but also representative of Japanese artistry at its finest. This photograph captures their beauty without any human presence, allowing viewers to appreciate them solely for their artistic merit. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured this moment in time, preserving it for art enthusiasts worldwide to admire and cherish for generations to come.
