EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 23rd of August in 1884, amidst the Franco-Chinese War. The image showcases Admiral Amedee Anatole Courbet and his officers on board the Volta, a ship that played a significant role during the conflict. The scene unfolds on the ship's deck as these brave naval figures stand united on the bridge. Their expressions reveal determination and resilience in the face of adversity. This particular moment captures them during an intense bombardment of Fou-Tcheou, a pivotal event in the war. The color lithograph by Charles Leduc beautifully brings out every detail, allowing us to appreciate not only their uniforms but also their unwavering commitment to duty. The composition highlights both unity and hierarchy within this group of sailors who have come together under Admiral Courbet's leadership. As we gaze upon this historical artifact from over a century ago, it serves as a reminder of valor and sacrifice displayed by those who served at sea. It offers us a glimpse into an era when conflicts were fought with cannons rather than computers. This remarkable piece from Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris invites us to reflect upon our own history while honoring those who dedicated themselves to protecting their nations' interests at all costs.
