EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a print of the iconic "Portrait of Louis XIV, young, in profile to the left" by Charles Le Brun. The pastel on grey beige paper artwork, measuring 51.5x39.8 cm, is housed in the Louvre's Cabinet de dessins in Paris. Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King or Roi Soleil, was one of France's most influential monarchs. This portrait depicts him during his youth with long flowing hair and a regal presence. His profile is turned to the left, showcasing his strong features and commanding gaze. The photograph itself was taken by Adolphe Giraudon around 1898-99 and is part of an extensive study for tapestry called "Tenture de L'Histoire du Roi". The intricate details captured in this image highlight Le Brun's skillful technique and attention to detail. Louis XIV's elaborate attire includes a jabot adorned with lace and a majestic wig that adds to his grandeur. As ruler of France and Navarre from 1643 until his death in 1715, Louis XIV played a significant role in shaping French history. This stunning portrait serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation of one of Europe's most powerful leaders. Its timeless appeal continues to captivate viewers even centuries after its creation.
