The Annunciation with St. Emidius

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating masterpiece by Italian artist Carlo Crivelli, created in 1486. This exquisite print showcases the harmonious blend of tempera and oil on canvas, bringing to life a scene of profound religious significance. At the center of the composition stands the Virgin Mary, portrayed with grace and humility as she receives news from Archangel Gabriel about her divine pregnancy. The delicate brushstrokes capture every intricate detail of her flowing robes and serene expression, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. The presence of St. Emidius adds an intriguing element to this artwork. Positioned beside Mary, he holds a model city in his hand symbolizing his role as the patron saint of Ascoli Piceno, Italy. The architectural marvels depicted in the background showcase Crivelli's meticulous attention to detail, transporting viewers into a bustling Renaissance town. One cannot help but notice the majestic peacock perched atop one of these buildings – an emblematic representation of immortality and resurrection often associated with Christian symbolism. The use of perspective creates depth within this piece; it draws our gaze towards distant horizons where towering structures like London's iconic Gherkin can be glimpsed amidst rooftops. Carlo Crivelli's "The Annunciation with St. Emidius" is not only visually stunning but also serves as a testament to his artistic prowess during the Renaissance period. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate audiences today at London's National Gallery.
