EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, titled "Peter the Hermit led the First Crusade (1096) with the cry of 'God wants it!'", takes us back to a pivotal moment in history. Created by Job, pseudonym for Onfray de Breville, Jacques, in 1896, this print captures the essence of the First Crusade. The image depicts Peter the Hermit leading a multitude of people towards their holy mission. With his arms raised and eyes filled with determination, he passionately cries out "God wants it!". This rallying call became synonymous with the fervor that drove thousands to join him on this arduous journey. The artist skillfully portrays not only Peter's charismatic leadership but also showcases the diverse group of individuals who answered his call. Knights clad in armor ride alongside commoners from all walks of life. Their colorful attire adds vibrancy to an otherwise somber medieval scene. As we delve into this historical artwork, we are transported to 11th-century Europe and witness firsthand how religion played a significant role in shaping society during that time. The crusades were not just military campaigns; they represented a fusion of faith and politics that left an indelible mark on European history. Through this illustration, Job encapsulates both the grandeur and complexity surrounding one of history's most influential events—the First Crusade. It serves as a reminder of humanity's capacity for devotion and our endless quest for meaning beyond ourselves.
