EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the masterpiece "Madonna and Child with Saints in the Enclosed Garden" by Master of Flemalle, also known as Robert Campin. Created between 1440-60, this oil on panel painting is a true gem of Netherlandish art. Measuring 119.8 x 148.5 cm, this artwork can be found at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, USA, as part of the Kress Collection. The composition depicts various saints such as St. John the Baptist, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Barbara, and St. Anthony. The enclosed garden serves as a symbolic setting for these holy figures to gather around Madonna and Child (Jesus Christ) in adoration and reverence. Each saint holds their own attribute or symbol that represents their unique characteristics or martyrdom. The attention to detail is remarkable; from St. Catherine's sword and wheel representing her martyrdom to St. Barbara offering an apple and quince symbolizing her faithfulness amidst adversity. Through this Northern Renaissance piece, we are transported back to medieval times where spirituality was deeply ingrained in society's fabric. The walled courtyard adds an element of seclusion while emphasizing Mary's purity as she cradles baby Jesus. With its rich symbolism and delicate portrayal of each figure, "Madonna and Child with Saints in the Enclosed Garden" continues to captivate viewers today just as it did centuries ago during its creation.
