EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by John Dakers takes us on a visual journey through the enchanting streets of Venice's Centro Storico. The focal point of this image is a beautifully illuminated lantern outside a restaurant, adorned with the inscription "ai lupi" which translates to "to the wolves" in Italian. This intriguing phrase holds significant meaning as it references Dante Alighieri's use of wolves as a metaphor in his renowned work, Inferno. The photograph captures the essence of Venetian culture and history, showcasing how art and literature intertwine seamlessly within everyday life. As we gaze at this mesmerizing scene, we are transported back in time to an era where symbolism played a crucial role in storytelling. The warm glow emanating from the lantern casts gentle shadows on the ancient cobblestones below, creating an atmosphere that is both mysterious and inviting. It beckons passersby to step into this hidden gem of a restaurant and indulge in culinary delights while immersing themselves in literary inspiration. Dakers' keen eye for detail allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also the rich tapestry of cultural references that make Venice such an extraordinary city. Through his lens, he invites us to explore beyond what meets the eye and delve deeper into its historical significance.
