EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print by Christina Dodwell, we are transported to the enchanting world of Mauritania. The image showcases a man skillfully preparing food in the serene courtyard of buildings adorned with exquisite traditional bas-relief ornamentation. The intricate patterns crafted from applied gypsum, white and red clay create a mesmerizing visual spectacle that reflects the rich architectural heritage of West Africa. As our eyes wander through the frame, we notice vibrant turquoise painted doors that add a pop of color against the earthy tones surrounding them. A washing line sways gently in the breeze, revealing glimpses into daily life within these walls. And amidst it all, goats roam freely, adding an element of liveliness to this tranquil scene. This photograph not only captures the beauty of Mauritanian architecture but also provides us with a glimpse into its people's way of life. It speaks volumes about their deep-rooted connection to tradition and their ability to find joy in simple moments like preparing meals together. Dodwell's composition invites us to immerse ourselves fully in this African oasis; it transports us beyond borders and allows us to appreciate both artistic expression and cultural diversity. Through her lens, she reminds us that art can be found not only on canvas but also within everyday life – even in something as mundane as washing lines or grazing goats
