EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration by Warwick Goble from the 1922 publication of "The Water Babies" we are transported into a world of wonder and discovery. The image depicts Tom, the main character, encountering a lobster for the very first time. His wide-eyed expression and open mouth reveal his astonishment at this strange creature before him. Goble's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his brush, bringing life to the vibrant colors that adorn this artwork. The intricate patterns on the lobster's shell and its long antennae create an air of mystery around it. Meanwhile, a sea urchin rests nearby, adding another element of intrigue to this underwater scene. "The Water Babies" is an English children's literature classic that takes readers on a magical journey through water realms filled with fantastical creatures like mermaids and fairies. Goble's illustrations beautifully complement the story, capturing its whimsy and enchantment. This particular print serves as a testament to Goble's talent as an artist and storyteller. It transports us back to early 20th-century England when children would eagerly flip through pages adorned with such colorful illustrations.
