Luxury, or the Comforts of a Rum p ford

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating and cheeky print that takes us back to the early 19th century. This satirical masterpiece by Charles Williams, dated circa 1801, playfully mocks an advertisement for Rumford stoves - Sir Benjamin Thompson's revolutionary fireplace design. The image showcases a woman with her back turned towards us, coyly revealing her rump adorned with the words "Rum p ford". The clever wordplay adds a touch of humor to this otherwise elegant piece. The woman stands in front of a warming fire emanating from the innovative Rumford stove, highlighting its efficiency and comfort. This colorized version breathes new life into an old engraving, making it suitable for contemporary wall art and decorative purposes. Its historical significance cannot be overlooked as it captures both the ingenuity of Count Rumford's invention and the artistic style prevalent during that era. While some may find elements of sensuality in this artwork due to its playful depiction of buttocks, it should be appreciated within its historical context rather than solely focusing on erotic undertones. "Luxury, or the Comforts of a Rum p ford" serves as both an amusing parody and an archival representation of Sir Benjamin Thompson's contribution to fireplace technology. Ken Welsh has skillfully preserved this unique illustration through his expertise in historical archives. This print invites viewers to appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also delve into centuries-old innovations that have shaped our modern comforts.
