EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the 17th century, during the reign of King Charles I. It showcases a vivid illustration from William Aubrey's renowned book, "The National and Domestic History of England" published in London around 1890. The image beautifully captures the everyday attire worn by ordinary English people during this era. Intriguingly, we see men and women donning their typical clothing of the time. The fashion choices reflect the distinct style prevalent during King Charles I's reign. From elegant dresses adorned with intricate details to finely tailored suits for men, these outfits exude a sense of sophistication and refinement. Amongst this crowd, we also spot a beggar who stands out amidst his well-dressed counterparts. This inclusion reminds us that even in an era marked by opulence and grandeur, there were still those struggling on society's fringes. As we delve into this historical snapshot, it becomes evident how fashion played a significant role in defining one's social status during this period. Each garment tells its own story - a testament to the rich tapestry of English culture at that time. Ken Welsh has masterfully captured both the essence and vibrancy of this scene through his expert photography skills. This remarkable print serves as an invaluable window into our past – allowing us to appreciate not only the beauty but also gain insights into the lives led by ordinary English people under King Charles I's rule.
