EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a tumultuous moment in history - the French Prussian War of 1870 to 1871. The scene depicted is one of intense action, as an attack with fire rages on a barricaded house from the 19th century. The artist behind this powerful illustration is none other than Alphonse Marie De Neuville, a renowned French painter known for his exceptional ability to capture historical events with great detail and emotion. Through his masterful brushstrokes, De Neuville brings this chaotic moment to life. Printed using the photogravure technique by Goupil and Company, every line and texture in this image is meticulously preserved. The horizontal composition adds depth and movement, immersing viewers into the heart of the battle. As we gaze upon this print, we can almost feel the heat of the flames and hear the crackling sound that accompanies them. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during times of war and highlights both human resilience and destruction. Ken Welsh's skillful reproduction allows us to appreciate every nuance captured by De Neuville's original painting. This piece not only showcases artistic brilliance but also serves as a poignant historical document that transports us back in time to witness an incident that shaped nations.
