EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing a copy of a woodcut from Cosmographie Universelle dated 1552. The image vividly illustrates the intriguing legend surrounding Barnacle Geese, believed to have grown from barnacles attached to wood exposed to saltwater. In this horizontal composition, we are transported into the medieval era, where history and myth intertwine. A serene pond serves as the backdrop for a majestic tree that stands tall on its banks. Perched upon its branches are these enigmatic birds - Barnacle Geese - their black and white feathers contrasting beautifully against the monochromatic palette of this mediaeval scene. The sketch-like quality of this historical print adds an air of authenticity and nostalgia. It is reminiscent of ancient illustrations and drawings that were prevalent during those times. As we gaze at this artwork, we can almost envision ourselves in an age long past, where legends thrived alongside reality. Ken Welsh's expertise shines through in capturing not just the physical appearance but also the essence of these creatures' mythical origins. With his masterful use of light and shadow, he transports us into a world where rivers whispered tales untold and trees held secrets within their gnarled trunks. This print is more than just an artistic representation; it invites us to delve deeper into our collective imagination while appreciating nature's ability to inspire awe throughout different ages.
