EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant print captured by Colorsport / Colin Elsey, we witness a moment of unity and remembrance in the world of rugby. The image showcases Peter Squires, an esteemed player for the International Rugby Writers XV, as he skillfully passes the ball during the 1977 Sam Doble Memorial Game held at The Reddings in Moseley. The match was not just about showcasing talent on the field; it carried a deeper purpose. It served as a means to raise funds for the grieving family of Sam Doble, an exceptional full back who tragically lost his battle with cancer at only 33 years old. This event brought together a formidable invitation XV team from around Britain to face off against an unbeaten Moseley side. As Squires releases the ball into play, one can almost feel the weight of emotion hanging in the air. Every pass made and every tackle executed becomes more than just moves on a rugby pitch; they become acts of solidarity and support for those left behind after such heart-wrenching loss. This photograph immortalizes not only a game but also serves as a testament to how sport can transcend its boundaries and unite people in times of sorrow. It reminds us that even amidst fierce competition, there is always room for compassion and empathy within our sporting communities.
