EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we find the Common Midwife Toad (Alytes obstetricans) in its natural habitat in Marquenterre, France. The intricately textured, moist underbelly of this amphibian is on full display, showcasing its unique and intriguing appearance. The Common Midwife Toad is a native of Europe and is easily recognizable by its distinctive yellow or orange parotoid glands located behind its eyes and on its back. These glands are used for defense, secreting a toxic substance to deter predators. Despite its name, this toad is not actually involved in the birthing process of other amphibians, as the name might suggest. Instead, it derives its name from the midwife-like shape of its hind legs, which are broad and webbed, allowing it to move gracefully in both water and on land. Marquenterre, located in the northwestern part of France, is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers due to its diverse range of wildlife. This image, taken by the skilled photographer M. Watson, captures the essence of this remarkable amphibian in its natural environment.
