EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of Upper Egypt, specifically in the village of Gurna, Luxor. The lens captures a scene that seems frozen in time, transporting us to 1983 when this photograph was taken by Quilici, Folco. In the patios of these humble houses, we witness an age-old tradition being carried out with utmost dedication and simplicity. A group of women can be seen engrossed in their daily chores - spinning wool using rudimentary tools. With skilled hands and focused expressions on their faces, they transform raw fibers into delicate threads that will eventually weave beautiful garments for their families. But it is not just wool that occupies these women's attention; another fascinating aspect unfolds before our eyes. In the scorching Egyptian sun, loaves of bread are left to rise naturally on open-air terraces. This ancient method harnesses the power of nature as warmth permeates through each doughy mound. As they bask under the golden rays, these loaves slowly expand and take shape – a testament to both resourcefulness and patience. The composition itself is strikingly simple yet rich with cultural significance. The contrast between light and shadow adds depth to this timeless tableau while emphasizing the resilience ingrained within Egyptian traditions. Quilici's keen eye has immortalized a moment that encapsulates not only the daily routines but also showcases how communities have thrived for generations amidst limited resources. Through this single frame frozen in time, we gain insight into a way of life deeply rooted in history. As we observe this remarkable scene from afar today, let us appreciate the strength and ingenuity displayed by these women as they carry on age-old practices passed down through countless generations – forever preserving Egypt's vibrant heritage.
