MFC-F-000533-0000 - Close up of the Fountain of the Turtles in Rome
EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time to 1880, as this print transports you to the heart of Rome's Piazza Mattei. Captured by Brogi, or possibly attributed to him, this remarkable image showcases a close-up view of the renowned Fountain of the Turtles. Dating back to 1581-1584 and crafted by Giacomo Della Porta and Taddeo Landini, this masterpiece stands as a testament to Greco-Roman mythology and artistic prowess. The fountain features intricately carved tortoises, symbolizing longevity and wisdom, amidst playful dolphins representing cetaceans. In this photograph, we witness every exquisite detail meticulously preserved from over three centuries ago. The turtles' textured shells seem almost tangible while their reptilian nature is brought vividly to life. Meanwhile, nearby human figures stand nude; their bodies reminiscent of classical sculptures that embody strength and grace. The juxtaposition between these magnificent creatures and the male form creates an intriguing contrast that invites contemplation on themes such as harmony between humans and nature or our place within ancient mythologies. As you gaze upon this historical treasure captured through Alinari's lens, immerse yourself in its rich tapestry where artistry meets natural beauty. Let your imagination wander through time as you explore not only Rome's architectural marvels but also its deep-rooted cultural heritage.
