EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur of the Arch of Peace in Milan. Standing tall and proud, this neoclassical masterpiece by Luigi Cagnola is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural prowess. Atop the penthouse of the arch, a colossal bronze Sestiga della Pace created by Abbondio Sangiorgio commands attention. Four Victories on Horseback, skillfully crafted by Giovanni Putti, surround it, symbolizing triumph and victory. The trabeations are adorned with representations of Lombardia and Veneto's four main rivers, reminding viewers of the region's natural beauty and importance. Below these intricate details lie bas-reliefs that depict episodes from the Restoration period. Every element in this artwork tells a story - from its meticulously designed architecture to its symbolic sculptures. The Milan Trimphal Arch is not just a structure; it represents an era marked by resilience and progress. Captured between 1915-1920, this photograph showcases Alinari Fratelli's talent for capturing historical landmarks with precision. It allows us to appreciate every intricate detail that makes up this magnificent piece of art. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to 19th-century Europe when neoclassicism reigned supreme. We can almost feel the weight of history as we admire each column, capital, festooned decoration, and vegetal element adorning this architectural marvel.
