Caecilians are a group of limbless, worm-like amphibians that live in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. They range in size from 4 inches to over 3 feet long. They have an elongated body with smooth skin and a reduced head, which is often covered by a protective shield. They have two rows of small scales running along their body, which help them move through soil and mud and can carnivorous animals that feed on worms, insects, mollusks, crustaceans, fish eggs and larvae. They use their sensitive tentacles to detect food in the dark underground habitats they inhabit. Most caecilians reproduce by laying eggs or giving birth to live young depending on the species. Despite being one of the least studied groups of amphibians due to their secretive lifestyle and underground habitat, caecilians play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems around the world.
