Ringed Seal Collection

The Ringed Seal (Phoca hispida) is a species of earless seal native to the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, and is the most abundant and wide-ranging of all seals, found in coastal waters from Alaska to Greenland, as well as in parts of Russia, Norway and Finland, small head with short snout and small eyes. Its fur is grayish-brown on its back with lighter sides and white underbelly. The ringed pattern on its back gives it its name; these rings are usually dark brown or black against a lighter background color. It feeds mainly on fish, crustaceans, mollusks, worms and other marine organisms and can dive up to 200 meters deep in search for food and can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes at a time. Breeding takes place during the spring months when ice floes form near shorelines; females give birth to one pup each year after an 11 month gestation period, and are hunted by humans for their fur but also face threats from climate change due to loss of sea ice habitat needed for breeding purposes.
