Azteca Collection

Azteca is a genus of Phyllostomidae mammals, commonly known as leaf-cutting ants, and are native to Central and South America, where they inhabit tropical and subtropical forests. Azteca species are small to medium-sized ants that can range in size from 3–10 mm in length. They have a distinctive black and yellow coloration with their heads being black and their bodies yellow or orange. These ants are omnivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, flowers, fungi, small insects and other arthropods. They use their mandibles to cut pieces of leaves which they then transport back to the nest for food storage or for use as a substrate for fungal gardens which they cultivate as part of their diet. Azteca species form large colonies with multiple queens that can contain up to several million individuals. Their nests can be found in tree trunks or under rocks where they provide important ecosystem services such as soil aeration and nutrient cycling through the decomposition of organic matter brought into the nest by workers.
