Ribbon Seal Collection

Ribbon seals (Phocidae) are a species of earless seal found in the Northern Pacific Ocean, and are medium-sized seals, with adults reaching up to 6.5 feet in length and weighing up to 300 pounds. Ribbon seals have a distinctive black and white pattern on their fur, which is why they are often referred to as “ribbon” seals. They have large eyes, small ears, and long whiskers that help them detect prey in the dark waters of their habitat. Ribbon seals feed mainly on fish and squid but also eat crustaceans and mollusks when available. They breed during the winter months near ice floes off the coasts of Alaska, Russia, Japan, and China. Females give birth to one pup each year after a gestation period of 11 months; pups are weaned after about three weeks but remain with their mothers until they reach maturity at two years old. Ribbon seals face threats from climate change as well as hunting for their fur by humans; however conservation efforts have been successful in protecting this species from extinction so far.
