Atrata Collection

Atrata is a family of mammals in the order Emballonuridae. These animals are found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They range in size from small to medium-sized bats with a wingspan of up to 20 cm (8 inches). They have long ears that are rounded at the tips, large eyes, and short snouts. Their fur is generally gray or brownish-gray with lighter patches on their undersides. They feed mainly on insects but may also eat fruit or nectar. Atrata roost in caves or hollow trees during the day and fly out at night to hunt for food, and are solitary creatures but will form colonies when food sources become scarce. These animals play an important role in controlling insect populations and pollinating flowers as they travel from place to place looking for food sources.
