Fosteri Collection

Fosteri are a species of Echimyidae mammals, also known as spiny rats, and are found in Central and South America, primarily in tropical rainforests. They have a wide range of colors, from black to brown to yellowish-gray. They have long tails with spines along the back and sides that help them climb trees and navigate their environment. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, nuts, leaves, and insects. They live in small family groups or colonies of up to 30 individuals which they defend against intruders with their sharp teeth and claws and can nocturnal animals that spend most of the day sleeping in hollows or tree cavities before emerging at night to feed on fruits and insects, and are an important part of the ecosystem as they help disperse seeds throughout their habitat while also providing food for predators like birds and snakes.
