California Sea Lion Collection

The California sea lion is a large marine mammal found along the western coast of North America, and is a member of the eared seal family and has a long, slender body with flippers for swimming and webbed feet for walking on land. Its coat is usually brown or tan in color, but can range from almost black to light gray. The males are larger than the females and can weigh up to 800 pounds, and are highly social animals that live in large colonies near shorelines and feed on fish, squid, octopus, crabs and other marine life. They have an excellent sense of hearing and vision which helps them locate prey underwater. California sea lions have been known to use tools such as rocks to break open shellfish or dig burrows into sandbanks for protection from predators. They also communicate through vocalizations such as barks, growls and whistles which they use to establish dominance within their colony or attract mates during breeding season.
