Wild Yak Collection

Wild Yak (Bos mutus) is a large mammal belonging to the Bovidae family, and is native to the high altitude grasslands and alpine meadows of the Himalayan region, stretching from Nepal to China and can reach up to 2 meters in height and weigh up to 1 tonne. They have long shaggy coats that vary in colour from dark brown or black, with lighter patches on their backs and legs, and are herbivores, grazing on grasses, sedges and other vegetation found in their habitat, and are highly social animals that live in herds of up to 30 individuals led by a dominant male known as a bull yak and are very strong swimmers and can be seen crossing rivers during migration season. Although they are not endangered, their population has been decreasing due to hunting for meat, hides and horns as well as habitat loss due to human activity such as overgrazing by domestic livestock. Conservation efforts have been undertaken by various organisations in order protect this species from further decline.
