The Western Black Widow is a species of spider found in western North America, and is a member of the Latrodectus genus, which includes several other black widow species. The female a glossy black body with an hourglass-shaped red or orange mark on its abdomen. The male is generally smaller and lighter in color than the female. Both sexes have short, stout legs and can reach up to 1 inch in length, and are most commonly found near human dwellings such as garages, sheds, and woodpiles where they spin their webs to catch prey like flies and other insects.
