Blue Duck Collection

Blue Ducks are a species of waterfowl found in New Zealand and Australia, and are medium-sized ducks, typically measuring between 40 and 50 cm in length. The males have a bright blue head, neck, breast and wings with white underparts while the females are more brownish in color. Blue Ducks feed mainly on aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, seeds and plant material. They nest near rivers or streams in dense vegetation or hollow logs. Blue Ducks form strong pair bonds that last for several years and they will defend their territory aggressively against other ducks. These birds can be seen throughout New Zealand during the breeding season from October to March but they migrate to Australia during the winter months, and are an important part of the ecosystem as they help control insect populations by preying on them as well as providing food for other predators such as hawks and owls.
