Roseate Spoonbill Collection

The Roseate Spoonbill is a large wading bird found in the Americas and has a pinkish-white body with long, spoon-shaped bill and black legs. The wings are broad and rounded, and the tail is short and square. Its diet consists of small fish, crustaceans, insects, mollusks, frogs and other aquatic invertebrates and can be seen in shallow wetlands such as marshes, swamps or lagoons where it uses its bill to sweep through the water to find food. It nests in colonies with other wading birds such as herons or ibises on islands or mangrove trees near water sources. The Roseate Spoonbill is an important species for wetland conservation due to its role in controlling insect populations that can damage crops or spread disease. Its population has been declining due to habitat destruction but it remains widespread throughout its range from southern United States down through Central America into South America.
