Red Junglefowl Collection

The Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) is a species of bird in the Phasianidae family, and is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and parts of China. The the ancestor of all domestic chickens and is the only wild member of its genus and has a distinctive red-brown plumage with black barring on its wings, tail feathers, and neck. Its wattles are bright red and it has a yellowish-white crest on its head. The male also has spurs on its legs for protection from predators. The female's plumage is duller than that of the male but it still retains some barring patterning on its wings and tail feathers. This species feeds mainly on insects, seeds, fruits, grains, leaves, flowers and other vegetation found in their natural habitat which includes grasslands as well as forests near water sources such as rivers or streams and are known to feed on small reptiles or amphibians when available.
