Lesser Cuckoo Collection

The Lesser Cuckoo is a small bird from the cuckoo family, found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia and has a distinctive call that sounds like “cuk-coo”. The Lesser Cuckoo is brownish grey in colour with white spots on its wings and tail feathers. Its bill is black with a yellow tip. It feeds mainly on insects such as caterpillars, grasshoppers and beetles. The Lesser Cuckoo builds its nest in trees or shrubs, laying two to four eggs at a time which are incubated by both parents for about two weeks before hatching. After hatching, the young birds are fed by their parents until they can fly around three weeks later. The Lesser Cuckoo is an important species for controlling insect populations but it faces threats from habitat loss due to human activities such as deforestation and urbanisation as well as predation by larger birds of prey.
