Green Sandpiper Collection

The Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) is a medium-sized wading bird belonging to the family Scolopacidae, and is found in Europe, Asia and North America, typically inhabiting wetland areas such as marshes, bogs and lakes and has a mottled greenish-brown back and wings with white underparts. Its bill is long and slightly upturned at the tip. The Green Sandpiper feeds mainly on insects, crustaceans and worms which it finds by probing in mud or shallow water with its bill. During breeding season it nests on the ground near water bodies, laying four eggs at a time which are incubated for around three weeks before hatching. The young birds fledge after about three weeks but remain dependent on their parents for several more weeks before becoming independent. In winter they migrate southwards to warmer climates where food sources are more abundant than in their northern breeding grounds.
