Cutter Wire and four other U.S. Coast Guard cutters are responsible for keeping a navigable channel open through the ice so that an average of 300 vessels that transit the Hudson River during the winter months, carrying over 5 million barrels of petroleum products including vital home heating oil, reach the communities of the northeast region.
