LM of Trichina larvae encysted in muscle tissue
Light micrograph of Trichina spiralis (formerly called Trichinella spiralis) larvae encysted in human muscle tissue. Each cyst (blue) contains a single tightly-coiled larva which is seen section- ed at several points (purple sausage shapes). T. spiralis is a species of roundworm parasitic on carnivores & the cause of trichinosis in humans. It may be found in pigs, foxes, dogs, cats, badgers & rats. Humans contract trichinosis through eating poorly-cooked pork infected with larval cysts. The worms mature in the intestine & release a new generation of larvae which burrow through the intestinal wall & migrate towards the muscles. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size
