Virgin rainforest is seen in this aerial photo of the Amazon Basin

Virgin Amazon jungle is seen in this aerial photo taken over Mato Grosso State, one of the Brazilian states of greatest deforestation, May 18, 2005, the day the Environment Ministry announced that land clearing had increased in 2004. One year after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced a plan of action against the destruction of the Amazon jungle, environmentalists say he has done more to promote dams, roads and farming than halt destruction of the world's largest rainforest, home to up to 30 percent of the world's plant and animal species. An A-10 Thunderbolt II awaits a mission at an airbase

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II awaits a mission at an airbase in Southwest Asia in support of operations in Iraq. The A-10 is a single-seat, twin-engine aircraft designed to provide close air support of ground forces by attacking armored vehicles and other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control guiding other aircraft against ground targets. It is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support
