An A-10 Thunderbolt II awaits a mission at an airbase

A U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II awaits a mission at an airbase in Southwest Asia in support of operations in Iraq. The A-10 is a single-seat, twin-engine aircraft designed to provide close air support of ground forces by attacking armored vehicles and other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control guiding other aircraft against ground targets. It is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support

Gnat head, SEM Featured 18 May 2005 Image

Gnat head, SEM

Gnat head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a gnat, a small type of fly (order Diptera), seen from the side. The compound eye (large, red) has many small lenses (ommatidia, round). A large antenna (centre right) is one of two mounted between the eyes (other antenna hidden behind this one). The antennae are sensory organs used for touch and smell. The gnat's mouthparts are seen below its eye. On top of the head is a raised lump (blue), which is one of the simple eyes (ocelli) found on flies. Sensory hairs are also seen
