LM of radiolaria, a type of marine protozoa

Radiolaria. Light micrograph of radiolaria, a type of marine protozoa. Radiolaria build hard skeletons (tests) made of silica around themselves as they float in seas with other plankton. They extend their protoplasm as pseudopodia (false feet) through pores in their test to feed on tiny organisms. Radiolaria can change their density in order to vary their depth. Large numbers of radiolarian skeletons litter the sea bed, becoming fossilised to form minerals like flint. Phase contrast. Magnification unknown

Red blood cells embedded in tissue Featured 3 Sep 2004 Print

Red blood cells embedded in tissue

Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of red blood cells in tissue. Blood is composed mainly of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Red blood cells are pumped to all parts of the body. They contain haemoglobin which bonds with oxygen in a reversible reaction in the lungs, and then releases that oxygen to cells in tissues. They then remove carbon dioxide from the cells and return it to the lungs. Tissues are collections of similar cells acting together to perform specific functions in the body (eg. muscles). Magnification: x1100 when printed 10 cm wide
