Data showing the distribution of dark matter
Dark matter distribution. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data showing the distribution of invisible dark matter in a cluster of galaxies. This 3- dimensional map shows the concentration of dark matter as height, with individual galaxies appear- ing as pinnacles. This map was produced by analys- ing light from a distant galaxy that had been bent by the gravity of a nearer cluster of galaxies. This gravitational lens created multiple images of the distant galaxy that allowed the mass distribu- tion to be calculated; the mass of visible matter, such as stars, was then subtracted. Most of the galaxy cluster's mass was found to be dark matter

False-colour TEM of a group of human lymphocytes
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of human lymphocytes, the smallest of the white blood cells. The central nucleus (brown) is slightly indented and the chromatin (genetic material - DNA) is moderately condensed; the darker coloured chromatin is seen towards the nuclear wall. The cytoplasm (yellow) is sparse, but contains a few mitochondria (small green, cigar-shaped bodies - the site of energy production and storage within the cell). The outer plasma membranes support a few microvilli (projections). Lymphocytes undergo transformations when activated in their role in immunological defence. Magnification x1650 at 35mm size
