Auroral research control room
Auroral research control room. Researcher in the control room of the Neil Davis Building of the Science Operations Center at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Alaska, USA. PFRR is primarily used to launch sounding rockets. These rockets are used to research the middle and upper atmosphere, including the region of the atmosphere that is too high for meteorological balloons, and too low for satellites. This region (50-200 kilometres above the Earth's surface) includes the auroral zones of the polar regions. The rockets are tracked, and data received from them (telemetry). Other PFRR atmospheric research includes the use of data from balloons and polar-orbiting satellites
