Arthritis. Artwork of a shoulder affected by rheumatoid arthritis. The upper-arm bone (humerus, at right) is shown out of its socket, revealing arthritic damage. The scapula (shoulderblade, at left) and clavicle (collarbone, at upper left) can also be seen. Parts of the muscle blocks (pink) are at far right, upper right and centre left. At centre the joint's fibrous capsule (pink) has been opened. Ligaments (pink, at centre) connect the bones. Cartilage (pink) that covers the tip of the humerus has been damaged. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system attacks the joints soft tissues and bones causing inflammation. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs
