Sagittal slice through a healthy human brain
Human brain. Slice through a healthy brain, sectioned sagittally in the midline from front (at left) to back. This longitudinal cut exposes major regions of the brain. At top are extensive convolutions of the cerebrum, where higher thought processes occur with voluntary body activity. The cerebellum (centre right) has fine convolutions, is part of the hindbrain, and coordinates muscle movement. The brain contains cavities (ventricles, centre left) which are normally fluid-filled. At centre is the elongated region of the brainstem, a stalk in the lower brain linked to the spinal cord and which controls basic functions like breathing. An adult human brain weighs about 1400 grams
