Weevil foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the foot of a black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus). The foot comprises a pair of adhesive hairy pads (lower centre) and a pair of hooked claws (centre right). The pads are used for walking on smooth surfaces, while the claws are used on surfaces that they can grip. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a vine weevil foot, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The black vine weevil, scientifically known as Otiorhynchus sulcatus, is notorious for its destructive behavior towards both woody and herbaceous plants. This pest particularly targets popular garden favorites like rhododendrons and strawberries. The image reveals the fascinating structure of the weevil's foot. At the lower center, a pair of adhesive hairy pads can be seen. These specialized pads enable the weevil to traverse smooth surfaces effortlessly. In contrast, at the center right are a pair of hooked claws that provide grip on rougher terrains. Interestingly, all adult black vine weevils are female and reproduce through parthenogenesis - an extraordinary form of asexual reproduction. The magnification used in capturing this image remains unknown but allows us to appreciate the minute features that make up this tiny creature's foot. As nature enthusiasts delve into this mesmerizing photograph, they gain insight into not only the anatomy but also the survival strategies employed by these insects. With their sticky pads and sharp claws perfectly adapted for different surfaces, vine weevils have evolved to navigate their environments with precision and efficiency.
