Fisheye view of tufa formations at Mono Lake, USA

Limestone tufas. Fisheye view of Mono Lake, California, USA, showing large tufa limestone formations. Tufas are columns or blocks of soft limestone, which here grow to a height of about 14 metres. They are formed by calcium carbonate being deposited from solution at a geothermal spring or by the evaporation of circulating water. Mono Lake is a salt lake which is slowly drying. Although it has no outflow, the water feeding the lake is being diverted at an increasing rate. This puts a great stress on the lakes wildlife, particularly migrating waterfowl

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Mono Lake in California, USA. Through a fisheye lens, we are granted a unique perspective on the remarkable tufa formations that grace its shores. Rising to an impressive height of approximately 14 meters, these columns and blocks of soft limestone create an otherworldly landscape. The formation of these tufas is a result of calcium carbonate being deposited from solution at geothermal springs or through the evaporation of circulating water. However, this magnificent salt lake faces a challenging fate as it slowly dries up. With no outflow and increasing diversion of its water supply, the delicate balance sustaining Mono Lake's wildlife is under immense stress. Migrating waterfowl find solace in this sanctuary during their journeys but are now confronted with dwindling resources due to human interference. The urgency to protect this fragile ecosystem has never been greater. As we gaze upon this image, let us be reminded not only of nature's astonishing artistry but also our responsibility to preserve it for generations to come. Science Photo Library brings us yet another stunning visual testament to the wonders that exist within our world - reminding us that every action counts when it comes to safeguarding our planet's precious natural treasures.
