Coloured SEM of a tooth with a dental crown

Dental crown. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tooth (green) with a dental crown (light blue). The tooth and ceramic crown are coated in debris (orange) which became attached to the tooth when it was extracted for this SEM. If the top of a tooth is badly cracked, decayed or broken, it must be replaced by an artificial crown. The remaining undamaged part of the tooth is cut down to a peg to receive the hollow crown. This crown is then shaped to form a replica of the original tooth and cemented in place. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tooth with a dental crown. The tooth, depicted in vibrant green, is adorned with a light blue ceramic crown. However, what truly captures the eye is the orange debris coating both the tooth and crown. This debris became attached to the tooth during its extraction process specifically for this SEM image. The significance of this image lies in highlighting the importance of dental crowns as replacements for damaged or decayed teeth. When the top portion of a tooth is severely cracked or broken, it necessitates an artificial crown to restore functionality and aesthetics. In such cases, the undamaged part of the natural tooth is reduced to form a peg-like structure that will securely hold the hollow crown. Through meticulous shaping and cementing techniques, dentists are able to create replica crowns that closely resemble their original counterparts. This intricate process ensures that patients can regain their confident smiles while preserving oral health. With magnification at x10 on a 6x7cm scale, this SEM image provides an up-close view into dentistry's transformative capabilities. It serves as a reminder of how advancements in medicine and technology continue to enhance our understanding and treatment options within oral healthcare.
