EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of a sunset over Jimbaran Bay on the enchanting resort island of Bali. Taken on August 13,2003, this image tells a poignant story about the devastating impact that last year's tragic bombing attacks had on Bali's thriving tourist industry. With tourism being the main source of livelihood for 70 percent of the island's population, these attacks dealt a severe blow to its economy. In stark contrast to its once bustling shores and vibrant atmosphere, this picture symbolizes a period of recovery and resilience for Bali. The sun gently dips below the horizon, casting warm hues across the bay and illuminating its tranquil waters. Against this backdrop lies an island adorned with world-renowned surfing beaches and lush rice paddies. However, statistics from Indonesia's bureau reveal a significant decline in tourist numbers during the first half of that year. Only 411,864 visitors arrived in Bali during this period – down by almost 40 percent compared to the previous year. Yet amidst adversity, hope remains as evident in Bob Strong's photograph. It serves as a reminder that even after facing immense challenges, Bali continues to offer breathtaking natural beauty and cultural richness that has captivated travelers from around the globe for generations.
