EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Fisher Bendix Factory in Kirkby, under new management on Monday, 20th March 1972. The factory's history dates back to 1961 when Fisher and Ludlow relocated their domestic appliance division to this purpose-built facility. Here, they manufactured renowned Bendix washing machines, Fisholow stainless steel sinks, and pressed steel radiators. With a capacity to employ up to 3,000 workers, the Kirkby factory was once a bustling hub of activity. However, by the mid-1970s, multiple owners had struggled to turn a profit from the factory's operations. In an effort to revive its fortunes and secure local employment opportunities, Kirby Manufacturing and Engineering emerged in 1974 with government backing. This marked a significant shift towards cooperative ownership as workers took charge of running the facility. The image not only offers a glimpse into industrial engineering during the early years of the seventies but also symbolizes resilience and community spirit amidst economic challenges faced by manufacturing industries at that time. It serves as a reminder of how factories like these played an integral role in shaping England's manufacturing landscape. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints by Liverpool Echo newspaper archives, this photograph stands as a testament to both historical significance and human determination within Merseyside's manufacturing heritage.
